A Gambian author and scholar at Howard University in the United States, Amat Tidjaanni Jeng, on Friday, June 12, 2026, presented copies of his book, Between Two Horizons, to His Excellency Momodou Lamin Bah, Ambassador of the Republic of The Gambia to the United States. The presentation ceremony was held at the Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Jeng, a former journalist, published the memoir in 2025. The book has steadily gained momentum due to its themes, many of which resonate strongly with Gambians and African diaspora community more broadly.
The presentation formed part of a gesture of appreciation for the support and solidarity the Embassy extended to the Jeng family following a fire outbreak at their residence in Washington, D.C. in April.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Bah commended Mr. Jeng for producing an exceptional body of work, noting that the dedication, rigorous research, and creativity invested in the book are evident throughout. He emphasized that writing such a book requires not only talent but also a deep commitment to storytelling, and he encouraged more individuals to document and share their experiences. The Ambassador reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting the growth of talent and creativity within Gambian communities across the United States.
The Ambassador encouraged the Gambian intellectual community to document and share Gambian stories, history and rich cultural heritage most of which he noted remains unrecorded and are preserved only through oral tradition.
For his part, the Deputy Head of Mission, Retired Lieutenant General Yakuba A. Drammeh, commended Mr. Jeng’s resilience, determination and thoughtfulness in crafting a compelling and inspiring narrative that reflects the contemporary challenges and opportunities faced by young people who travel abroad. He said having read portions of the book, DHM Drammeh noted that the author writes from the heart, offering a genuine reflection of his life experiences. He encouraged Mr. Jeng to continue his work so that other Gambians may be inspired to follow his example.
Mr. Amat Tidjaanni Jeng used the occasion to thank the Embassy through the Ambassador for coming to the aid of his family following the fire outbreak at their residence. He explained that he and his wife felt it was important to visit the Embassy to express their gratitude by donating copies of his book, Between Two Horizons, which is available on Amazon.
Other members of the diplomatic staff also expressed appreciation to Mr. Jeng for presenting his memoir to the Embassy, noting that its themes make it a valuable reference for members of the Gambian community. The event was coordinated by Mr. Saikou Ceesay, First Secretary.
